April Fools Day Pranks: Could they be the seeds of future innovation?
Every year on April 1st, brands like to have a little fun and trick their consumers with fake product announcements. While these pranks are all in good jest, it sometimes makes you wonder – could some of these wacky ideas actually become real innovations in the future?
This year, I saw some pretty interesting faux products from some big brands. Here are a few that caught my eye:
Ola Electric's Flying Motorbike Taxi: Ola Electric, the Indian electric vehicle manufacturer, announced a flying motorbike taxi service. While flying cars might still be a bit of a pipe dream, electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles are a real technology that is being developed by a number of companies. So, maybe Ola Electric is onto something here!
Bingo! Mad Angles potato chips: Bingo!, the popular Indian snack brand, came out with a line of chips that were, well, mad angles. The chips were all misshapen and uneven, which is something that we typically try to avoid in our snacks. But Bingo! argued that these chips were actually more flavorful because they had more surface area. Could this be the start of a new trend of "ugly food" that is actually delicious and reduces waste?
Ajio Life's Rent a Friend Service: Ajio Life, an Indian online fashion retailer, announced a service where you could rent a friend. This might seem like a strange idea, but it highlights the growing trend of people seeking out social connection in new and innovative ways. Perhaps there is a market for a platform that connects people who are looking for companionship.
